You'll go coocoo for Le Coucou

Daniel Rose's Le Coucou has been a huge sensation in the NYC food scene this year. After they won the prestigious James Beard Foundation award for Best New Restaurant reservations were even more difficult to make. Luckily we scored reservations on a beautiful Friday night and we enjoyed a luxurious 2 1/2 hour dinner with a bottle of Cabarnet Franc and of course some of the best French food I've had in the city. And while the food at Le Coucou certainly stands out the ambience deserves to be lauded just as much. Every table is candlelit, the space itself is huge giving you more than enough space to enjoy your company and you'll see for yourself how harmoniously every chef and sous chef works in the open kitchen. This restaurant certainly deserves to be on your list of places for special occasions but you can always just treat yourself too, right?

Favorites

1. Sweetbreads, cream, tarragon, maitake mushrooms- I was very tempted to lick the dish afterwards to get every bit of that incredible cream sauce. This dish is full of herb aroma and the texture on the sweetbread pairs so well with the sauce. Every dish should be this well crafted!

2. Lamb rack, eggplants, tomatoes stuffed with “choulder and chard”- This lamb rack was the best one I've ever had. Everything from the marinade, grill and moisture reaffirms that the chefs at Le Coucou are amazing at what they do. The stuffed tomatoes were good but the lamb rack easily overshines it.

3.  Baked Alaska with pistachio ice cream, cherries, kirsch- This is a wonderful boozy (brandy) dessert with pistachio ice cream and cake layered in. Although simple, it was the perfect ending to a decadent meal.

A Parisian bistro in New York, MIMI will make you fall in love again

MIMI NYC  is easy to miss. Tucked away on the busy streets of NYU's sprawling campas with only two pairs of garden style wire patio set outside, you would never imagine that when you walk into this modern Parisian bistro you will have some of the best French food in the city. I strongly believe that French cooking is a celebration of everyday produce and meats like bibb lettuce, watercress, shishito peppers and chicken- all of which you can find at MIMI. The aroma of French butter (the best!!) will invite you in and if you don't have a reservation which are difficult to make, you can take a seat at the bar where you can also eat the full dinner menu. MIMI takes traditional bistro French food into the modern era- with less flare and more flavor. So what are you waiting for? If you've haven't already made those reservations then hurry!

Favorites

1. Veal tartare- The saltiness of the parmesan cuts through the texture of the veal. The perfect bite would consist of the veal, parmesan and the delicious watercress. Eating your veggies at MIMI is worth it.

2. Roast chicken with potato dumplings, mustard and escarole- I loveeee French chicken. Maybe it's the butter or the grill or the chicken but, no matter what it's delicious and that was no exception at MIMI. The browned chicken skin was perfect and the meat was very juicy. The potato dumplings were doughy but had enough flavor to still bring a different taste to the dish. Escarole was amazing! I can't believe veggies can be so delicious.
